Davis® Math Mastery Program | Dyscalculia

Davis® Mastery for Math Program is designed for those with dyscalculia or acalculia — learning difficulties with math that often accompany dyslexia and ADHD. During the program, we master the basic math functions and concepts that are foundational to learning mathematics.

Visual-spatial thinkers are often confused by the words and symbols that describe math functions. Once the foundational concepts for understanding mathematics are mastered, learning math becomes genuinely easy.

Like Davis® Mastery for Dyslexia, the first step is learning to control disorientation. Once a student can trust that their perceptions are accurate, they can resolve confusion about math by building on their creative, imaginative strengths rather than fighting against them.

The program is done as 3-hour sessions each day, over 15 days. This schedule is fixed, similar to the Dyslexia program. This program is for children (approximately age 8 and up), teens, and adults.

Skills You’ll Gain

  • The ability to create and monitor a focused state at will
  • Self-regulation of energy levels to match the task at hand
  • Improved balance and coordination
  • Resolution of confusion caused by numbers
  • Understanding of your own learning style, and recognition of its gifts
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Improved ability to correctly write numerals without reversals
  • Mastery of the basic concepts underlying all mathematics: change, consequence, cause and effect, before/after, time, sequence, and order vs. disorder
  • Confusions resolved with understanding of math symbols and terms
  • Improvement with basic math operations — addition, subtraction, carrying and borrowing, multiplication, and division
  • Increased understanding of vocabulary used in story problems (words like is, are, and, of, to)
  • Visual, concrete understanding of place value
  • Practical math skills: telling time, reading a calendar, counting money, making change, balancing a checkbook

What a Session Looks Like

  • Reviewing the previous session’s work
  • Checking in and settling into a focused state, using the self-regulation tools you’ve learned
  • Koosh ball exercises while balancing
  • Clay concept work — building sentences, exploring concepts in the real world, and creating clay models that capture the meaning of a word and how it’s used in math
  • A short break partway through the session
  • Additional threads woven in as needed: math function words, place value, clay-ball multiplication/division grids, and understanding your own neurodivergent strengths

Understanding Disorientation

Like the Dyslexia program, Math Mastery starts by teaching you to recognize and control disorientation — the mental static that makes numbers, symbols, and sequences hard to hold onto. Read the full explanation of disorientation on the Dyslexia program page →

Math has its own unique confusions on top of this: words like “by” and “of” mean different things depending on the context — “by” can mean multiply or divide; “of” can mean a fraction or portion taken from something. Part of this program is mastering these math-specific trigger words in clay, so their meaning becomes concrete rather than something to memorize and forget.

What’s Included

You’ll receive a Math Mastery kit with everything needed for the program and your follow-up work: a student manual, modeling clay, Koosh balls, and a math dictionary.

Support That Continues After the Program

Everyone supporting you or your child gets trained in the same tools and techniques, so progress continues at home. You’ll also have up to 6 hours of follow-up support built in, along with ongoing phone and email support as questions come up.

See What’s Possible

“He has made more progress in these areas than in the last three years in a school for dyslexic children.”

— Jan, grandmother of a 13-year-old
